Youth Honoree - Elizabeth "Lizzy" Parrone
Hi, my name is Elizabeth Parrone, but everyone calls me Lizzy. I am three years old now, but I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) in April, 2011. I was just a baby! When I woke up, I wasn’t able to bear any weight on my right leg and I kept falling down. Mom took me to the doctor, the emergency room and then to an orthopedic specialist where I had some X-rays and blood work, and was diagnosed with JRA. I was sent to see a Rheumatologist at Strong Hospital. She quickly started me on medicine to make me better, but the arthritis went from my right knee to six other joints. I had to have steroid injections in a few of my joints. Thank goodness they put me to sleep! I took different medicines and then had to have shots every week and blood drawn every month. I don’t really like it, but I try to be brave for Mom and Dad. I like it when I get prizes – like Squinkies® – after my blood draws.
Now I am on two shots a week, plus some other stuff. Today, only two of my joints are affected, as the medicine has put the others into remission. I feel so much better, and now I’m running and jumping – you wouldn’t even know I had a problem. JRA affects my whole family. I have a big brother Benjamin, who is 10 and a big sister Andrea, who is 8. We live with my Dad and Mom (Matt and Tasha) and Duke – our chocolate lab. They have to make sure I get my medicine, take me to my doctor’s appointments and blood work, and worry about me. They believe I can do anything, and I can. Family and friends have participated in Arthritis Walks in my name and have raised a lot of money. There are so many people out there who love and support me. They are called Lizzy Lou’s Lovies! Won't you join me at the Rochester Arthritis Walk?
Thank you for participating in the 2013 Arthritis Walk®, the signature fundraising event for the Arthritis Foundation. Every year, people across the country move together to celebrate those who are making a positive impact on the lives of people living with arthritis.
More than just an event, Arthritis Walk® is a celebration of year-round movement. It is building awareness for this debilitating disease and raising necessary funds to drive arthritis research, education and life improvement programs; it also continues the Arthritis Foundation’s search to find a cure to the nation’s leading cause of disability.
Our mission is to improve lives through leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis and related diseases. When you join us at the Arthritis Walk®, you're not moving alone -- you are becoming part of a community looking to achieve better health and change lives at the same time.
